A Quick Recap from this episode

I’m excited to share with you my personal experience with becoming a money coach. I don’t believe that I’ve shared this before, so I’m excited to dive into it as I’m in the middle of this huge pivot in my life and shifting my business’ focus to working as a business coach and mentor for money coaches and helping them build their freedom based businesses. I believe the world absolutely needs more money coaches, so I’m excited to step into this role.

I’ve spent the last four years building my own thriving money coaching business, and now I want to share with you my story of how that has come to be.

I got my start with money when I picked Actuarial Science as my college major. I didn’t fully know what it was but I always loved the idea of being a business woman, I was good at math, and I thought it’d be worth a try. After graduating I had several internships and then moved to Chicago to start my career as an actuary, which ultimately was short-lived.

A mentor that I really looked up to, Adam Carroll, cracked open the door to entrepreneurship for me. I attended one of his conferences that leaned into leadership and entrepreneurship and met my post-graduation roommate who had great money and flexibility as an independent contractor. I was very interested in what she was doing, but committed to my career as an actuary for another two years.

I hit a wall and found burnout while realizing that this career path wasn’t for me. From watching my roommate and some other friends and listening to podcasts like The Tim Ferriss Show and Lewis Howes’ School of Greatness, I was very interested in entrepreneurship, but felt like the stories of female entrepreneurs were really missing.

It was early 2015, and my roommate Amanda Boleyn, myself, and our friend Molly began a podcast called She Did It Her Way, and that gave me something to do outside of thinking about how much I disliked my work. In that process I also decided to invest a lot of money in an online program that helped you build SaaS products for other companies. I saved a lot of money up, bought my house, and was renting out my spare room, all with the plan that I’d ultimately leave my job, which I did in May 2015.

Shortly after leaving, I gave up on building a SaaS product. I' had essentially invested in this program to give me the permission to leave my job, and still believe it was a great investment because it made me realize how much more there was out there that I could do.

Through the podcast, I got connected to someone who was building a content marketing agency, and I applied as a content strategist for their company. I worked with the incredible Ashley Logan for her company Yakkety Yak for almost two years and knew that there was more that I could do than doing data and finance on a corporate level.

I started looking at what I could do on my own, and instantly got lost because I could do so much, but I knew that I wanted to create content to help people like me - young women who were getting started in their careers and had no idea what they were doing in adulthood.

The Wander Wealthy podcast (known then as Words and Money) was born out of that desire to help. I didn’t know how I was going to monetize it or where it would go, but I knew I would figure it out. It took about 8 months of doing the podcast every single week before I realized coaching was a thing. Someone asked me if I did coaching, and I said yes.

I didn’t start working with her until January 2017, but it opened the door for coaching for me, and I got my first official client in November 2016. She ended up ghosting me after two meetings, but when January came around I had the original inquiry plus another client, and both of them got wonderful results after working with me for 3 months.

I made so many mistakes along the way, got distracted, and felt like a failure while I doubted myself for the next year and a half, because I felt like I was trying everything and couldn’t actually make this a full-time, profitable thing. I made so many changes, and eventually realized that when you fail you can’t just move on to the next thing. You have to try and fail many times at one thing before you’re successful at it.

The latter half of 2018 is when I really went all in on rebranding the podcast and creating an irresistible offer for my coaching clients. When I really went all in on this, it worked, and I kept with the vision and message that I wanted to share. I had a methodology and a package and was booking out my roster, and completely realized that it works and it IS sustainable.

I know there are a lot more questions surrounding building a coaching business and creating your offer, and I promise you I’ve got the answers for you. I’m in the works of putting together a program, The Wealthy Coach Blueprint, that gives you one-on-one time with me and accountability to help you attract and bring in more clients to build your booked out coaching business in 90 days, so keep listening to the podcast for more info, and reach out to me if you’re interested in this!
